Roland VersaSTUDIO BD Series

The Roland DG VersaSTUDIO BD Series is a pair of desktop UV LED flatbed printers, the BD-8 and the newer BD-12, for printing graphics and text directly onto objects up to 102 mm high. They use Roland ECO-UV (EUV5) ink in CMYK and white, plus primer or gloss, and have a built-in fume extractor and a full-cover design. VersaWorks 7 software is included. Available from Sign to Badge Solutions.

Key features

1Print directly onto objects

The BD Series prints onto items up to 102 mm high, including flat, curved, concave, convex, irregular and textured surfaces. Roland lists plastics, paper, leather and wood, and glass and metal with primer.

2Two desktop sizes

The BD-8 has a 210 × 148 mm print area and the BD-12 a 305 × 210 mm print area, so you can choose the bed that suits the items you decorate.

3White, primer or gloss

Alongside CMYK, white ink lets you print light colours and white onto dark surfaces. The fifth channel takes either primer, for materials such as glass and metal, or gloss for gloss and matte finishes and simulated embossing.

4Fume extractor and full cover

A built-in fume extractor means you don’t need a separate air filtration unit, and the full-cover design provides UV light protection. Roland’s ECO-UV 5 inks are GREENGUARD Gold certified.

5Front access, against a wall

Media set-up, ink loading and maintenance are all done from the front, so the printer can sit on a desk against a wall. An automatic cleaning function cleans the printhead surface.

6Colour settings and software

The BD Series supports True Rich Color 3, a Roland print setting for colour vibrancy and accuracy. VersaWorks 7 output software is included, and the Roland DG Connect app gives you a detailed view of your printers.

The two models

Both models share the same ink system, 102 mm object height and 1,440 dpi maximum resolution. The main difference is the bed size.

What else you’ll need

Roland lists the following for setting up a BD Series printer.

A desk or bench

The BD Series is designed to sit on a desk. The BD-8 weighs 61 kg and measures 768 × 586 × 580 mm; the BD-12 weighs 80 kg and measures 995 × 710 × 583 mm.

A controlled room temperature

Roland specifies 20–32 °C (22 °C or higher recommended) and 35–80% relative humidity, with no condensation.

Primer or gloss: your choice

The ink set is CMYK and white plus either primer or gloss. Primer is used for materials such as glass and metal; gloss gives gloss, matte and embossed effects.

A computer and network

VersaWorks 7 runs on your computer, and the printer connects by Ethernet. The optional rotary accessory adds printing around pens, jars and small bottles.

About the technology

Desktop UV printing on objects

UV LED printers jet ink that is cured on the object by an ultraviolet LED lamp. Roland says its wide-gamut ECO-UV 5 (EUV5) inks dry instantly and adhere well to a wide variety of materials, from plastics, paper, leather and wood to glass and metal with primer.

The BD Series puts this into a compact, fully enclosed desktop printer with a built-in fume extractor. White ink adds opacity on dark or clear items, and gloss ink can create gloss and matte finishes and simulated embossing. Roland notes that print modes include built-in settings for specific applications, and the optional rotary accessory extends printing to cylindrical items.
