Epson SureColor G6060

The Epson SureColor G6060 (SC-G6060) is a 35-inch (900 mm) direct-to-film (DTFilm) production printer. It prints white and CMYK onto roll film from 254 to 900 mm wide using Epson UltraChrome DF ink in 1.6 L pouches, with an integrated cutter for sheet output, and can run in-line with a third-party powder shaker and oven for roll-to-roll work. Epson designed it for medium to high volume commercial production. Available from Sign to Badge Solutions.

Key features

1Developed for DTFilm

Epson developed the SC-G6060 exclusively for direct-to-film work. It prints a single layer (white or CMYK) or a dual white + colour layer.

2Cut sheets or roll-to-roll

An integrated auto-cutter holds each finished job until the operator releases it from the control panel, or the printer can feed a compatible third-party shaker/oven for continuous rolls.

3Fine lines and solid fills

1.33″ PrecisionCore MicroTFP printhead with Variable Sized Droplet Technology and Epson Precision Dot processing, at up to 600 × 1200 dpi. Ink duty levels can be adjusted to suit different films.

4Low-touch maintenance

Continuous white ink recirculation, ink-less nozzle status monitoring, a fabric-based self-cleaning printhead and an advanced self-washing capping system. Epson says manual maintenance typically takes a couple of minutes once a week.

5Front-loaded 1.6 L pouches

All consumables load from the front, with a bulk waste system. Epson states the inks stay fresh in the printer for up to a year.

6Software and management

Includes Epson Edge Print PRO RIP software; Fiery Digital Factory Epson Production Edition comes with selected bundles. Epson Cloud Solution PORT adds job costing, remote monitoring and service diagnosis.

Print speeds are not listed here because they vary with film width, print mode and the number of layers, and total production time also depends on powdering, curing and pressing; ask us about expected output for your jobs.

What else you’ll need

A DTFilm set-up involves more than the printer. Epson lists the following as required or recommended.

DTF film and powder

Film and adhesive powder are sourced separately. Not all films and powders are compatible, so Epson recommends discussing your choice with your dealer.

Oven or shaker/oven unit

Sheet output needs a suitable oven to melt the powder (a powder applicator can help productivity). Roll-to-roll output needs a compatible shaker/oven unit.

Heat press

A heat press is needed with either set-up to transfer the finished film onto garments and merchandise.

A computer and network

A 64-bit Windows 10/11 PC runs Edge Print PRO (Epson lists a multicore 3.0 GHz processor, 8 GB RAM and 50 GB storage as a minimum), with an Ethernet connection to the internet recommended.

About the technology

How direct-to-film works

Direct-to-film (DTFilm) is an alternative to direct-to-garment (DTG). The design is printed onto film, adhesive powder is applied, the film is baked, and the transfer is then heat-pressed onto the item. The finished print has a different look and feel from DTG.

Epson notes the process involves more steps than DTG, but fabric doesn’t need pre-treating, printing uses less ink, and artwork can be produced in advance and applied when the customer chooses the item. Adhesion and durability vary between fabrics and surfaces, and not every substrate suits heat transfer, so Epson recommends discussing your fabrics and workflow before you buy and running print tests.

Epson states that UltraChrome DF ink adheres to the OEKO-TEX ECO PASSPORT and GOTS-ECOCERT standards.

Suited to:

  • Medium to high volume commercial production
  • Cut-sheet transfer production
  • Roll-to-roll production (with a shaker/oven)
  • Transfers made in advance and pressed to order
  • A wide range of fabrics, without pre-treatment
  • Merchandise such as umbrellas, coasters and binders
